Agafay vs Merzouga: Which Desert Trip From Marrakech?

"Should we do Agafay or Merzouga?" is one of the questions we hear most from guests in Marrakech. They are both deserts, but they are very different trips. The short answer: it depends on how many days you have.
The short answer
- One day, or a short stay? Choose Agafay. It is under an hour from Marrakech, and you sleep back at your riad the same night.
- Three days or more, and you want sand dunes? Choose Merzouga. It is the classic Sahara, but it is a long road trip.

Agafay: the desert next door
Agafay is a stone desert south-west of Marrakech: bare, rolling hills in shades of sand and ochre, with the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon on a clear day. There are no tall dunes. What you get is space, silence and big light, especially in the late afternoon and at sunset.
- About 45 minutes to an hour by car from the city.
- Works as a morning, an afternoon, or a full day. No overnight needed.
- Popular extras are a camel ride, a quad bike, or lunch at a desert camp.
- Easy with children, older travellers, or anyone short on time.

Our Agafay desert day tour is private: your own car and driver from Riad Bab Atlas or your hotel, the desert, lunch, and back before evening. Camels, quads, or a longer camp stop are optional. Ask and we include them.
Merzouga: the Sahara dunes
Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, the great sand sea in eastern Morocco near the Algerian border. This is the desert of the postcards: orange dunes, camel treks at sunset, and a night in a camp under the stars.
- About 9 to 10 hours of driving each way from Marrakech, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the High Atlas.
- Most trips take three days and two nights, with stops along the way such as Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and the Dadès and Todra gorges.
- You need to be comfortable with long days in a car.
- Nights in the dunes are cold in winter. Summer days are very hot.
Merzouga is not a day trip. If someone offers it in one day from Marrakech, most of that day is spent in a car.
Which one should you choose?
- Three or four nights in Marrakech: Agafay. Add the hot air balloon or an Essaouira day tour on another day.
- A week or more in Morocco: Merzouga is worth it if the dunes matter to you. Our three-day trip is below. Agafay is still an easy half day before or after.
- Travelling with young children: Agafay. Short drive, no overnight, back for a swim at the riad.
- You want a desert sunset, not a road trip: Agafay in the late afternoon.
Our Merzouga trip: 3 days, 2 nights

What to bring
- Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen. There is little shade.
- Closed shoes for stony ground.
- A light scarf for wind and dust.
- A warm layer for the evening, in every season except summer.
- Water, and some cash in dirhams for tips or small purchases.
Frequently asked questions
Is Agafay a real desert?
Yes, but a stone desert, not a sand one. Agafay is dry, rolling hills of rock and earth with almost no vegetation. There are no tall sand dunes. For dunes you need the Sahara at Merzouga or Zagora.
How far is Agafay from Marrakech?
About 40 km south-west of the city, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car. That is why it works as a day trip and you can sleep back in Marrakech the same night.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?
Roughly 550 km, about 9 to 10 hours of driving each way over the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the High Atlas. Most people take three days and two nights, breaking the drive with stops on the way.
Can you do Merzouga as a day trip from Marrakech?
No. The round trip alone is close to 20 hours of driving. Our Merzouga trip is three days and two nights, with a night in the Dadès Gorges and a night in a desert camp. If you only have one day, Agafay is the desert to choose.
Which is better for families or short trips, Agafay or Merzouga?
Agafay. The drive is short, there is no overnight needed, and you are back at your riad or hotel for dinner. Merzouga suits travellers with three or more days who want the big sand dunes.
When is the best time to visit the desert near Marrakech?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable for both. In summer, go to Agafay late in the day and avoid midday heat. In winter, desert nights are cold, especially at Merzouga.
