Planning a Morocco trip from the USA

Flights through the hubs that reach Marrakech, the months that walk well, a careful note on visas for U.S. citizens, and itineraries that start and end where your ticket does. Call your local Pittsburgh travel agent at 412-708-6866.

The shape of the ticket decides the week. Marrakech Menara, code RAK, is the airport that matches a stay at Riad Bab Atlas and the day tours that leave the city in the morning. The Sahara dunes at Erg Chebbi are real, and they are a multi-day drive, not a side trip from the arrivals hall. Agafay, the stone desert west of Marrakech, is the desert you can see and still sleep in the city. This page is the planning layer: how Americans usually fly, when to go, what to read about entry, and which of our packages fits a round trip.

Guided Tours to Morocco answers the phone in Pittsburgh and meets the flight in Marrakech. If you want a person rather than a search result, call your local Pittsburgh travel agent at 412-708-6866 or email guidedtourstomorocco@gmail.com. We book the riad, the car, and the road directly.

Flights via the hubs that reach Marrakech

Most U.S. home airports have no nonstop into RAK, and we do not publish a timetable. Search your dates and read the airport codes. The pattern that works is a U.S. hub, a long sector, and a short hop into Marrakech.

Common U.S. hubs are New York (JFK or Newark), Washington Dulles, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The long sector usually continues through Casablanca (CMN) or Madrid, Paris, Lisbon, London, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt, then a short flight to RAK. Leave enough time if the bags are not tagged through. The private black-car transfer meets that landing, including a late one, when you send the flight number.

Landing at CMN and driving south is a different day: on the order of two and a half to three and a half hours before traffic, and the Menara car will not be at the Casablanca kerb. That pickup is ask for price. Fes (FEZ) matters because the 4-day Marrakech to Fes Sahara tour ends at a Fes hotel, so an open-jaw ticket home from FEZ matches it. A round trip that must start and end in Marrakech matches the 10-day Grand Morocco tour, which returns to the riad and includes a Menara drop-off the next morning. Morocco is usually five or six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time, and the country has shifted its clock around Ramadan. Check the gap for your dates before a sunrise pickup, and do not put Essaouira on the day you land.

Best seasons: October–December and March–May

October through December is the first window: a walkable medina, a clearer Atlas, cooler December nights, and a faster-filling riad at Christmas and New Year. Desert-camp nights are cold. March through May is the second window, with greener valleys, and a tighter week if your dates fall on Easter.

June through August is hot at midday. January and February are cooler and quieter. Ramadan changes daytime café hours, so check those dates for your year.

Visas for U.S. citizens: read the official page

Entry rules are not a tour detail we invent. For U.S. citizens, start with the U.S. Department of State’s Morocco page: travel.state.gov. When this page was written, that source listed a tourist visa as not required for stays under 90 days. It also said your passport should be valid for at least six months at entry and should have one blank page for the entry stamp. The same page tells travelers to visit the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco for the most current visa information.

Treat that as a pointer, not a clearance. The State Department page says an overstay past 90 days without an extension can mean appearing before a judge, and that clearance may include a fine. Check travel.state.gov again before you buy the ticket, and check the Moroccan embassy or consulate for your home address. If they disagree with this page, follow them. Bring the passport you booked with.

Money

Morocco uses the dirham. Tell your bank you are traveling so a card is not blocked at Menara. ATMs in Marrakech dispense dirhams, cards work in many hotels and restaurants, and the medina still wants cash for small buys, tips, and a taxi you hail yourself. We do not publish an exchange rate.

The same State Department page lists amounts to declare on the way in and a prohibition on exporting dirhams. Read those figures there before you travel. On our side the published rates are narrow: Riad Bab Atlas is €300 a night with a three-night minimum, the Menara black car is free for 1 to 5 guests on a stay of three nights or more and +€50 for 6 to 8, and the hot-air balloon is from $160 per person. Day tours, a driver by the day, and the multi-day routes are ask for price. The reply carries the number before you pay.

What to pack

For October through December and March through May, pack layers, a warmer piece for desert nights on the 4-day and 10-day routes, and closed shoes for the medina, an Ourika path, and the balloon. A loose scarf can catch on landing. Cover shoulders and knees for a mosque or a village stop, and keep a sun hat in the day bag.

Plugs are European Type C and Type E. Carry medicine in its original packaging in your cabin bag, and keep a copy of the passport page separate from the passport.

Sample itineraries that match the ticket

A first week in and out of Marrakech can be the riad plus day tours: Agafay’s stone desert, Ourika in the Atlas, and either Essaouira or the sunrise balloon. You sleep in the city and you do not see the tall dunes. The balloon is from $160 per person. The other days are ask for price.

If the dunes are the point, use the 4-day Marrakech to Fes Sahara tour. It crosses the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, Erg Chebbi for camel rides and a camp night, a free day in Merzouga, and your Fes hotel. Standard and Luxury are ask for price. Fly home from FEZ, or ask about a separate transfer. That price is not a flight back to Menara.

The 10-day Grand Morocco tour from Riad Bab Atlas is the round trip into RAK: riad nights, Marrakech, Agafay or Ourika, an Essaouira night, the Atlas and Erg Chebbi, then the riad again and a Menara drop-off the next morning. The riad portion is four bedrooms and two shared pools, up to eight guests. Breakfast on riad nights is the first morning only. Standard and Luxury are ask for price. Compare them on our packages before you hold dates. The 3-day Merzouga loop and the 7-day combination are listed there as well, also ask for price.

Sleep before a long drive. The Menara transfer is free for 1 to 5 guests on a riad stay of three nights or more, and +€50 for 6 to 8. Add the flight number when you request riad dates.

Your local Pittsburgh travel agent

Call your local Pittsburgh travel agent at 412-708-6866. The desk that answers also meets the flight in Marrakech. A layover question and a “we are six people” question get the house rule: 1 to 5 guests on a stay of three nights or more have the Menara car included, and 6 to 8 add €50.

Email guidedtourstomorocco@gmail.com with the home airport, the dates, the group size, and whether you need the dunes. We reply with availability and a quote. Payment links for the riad live on the Riad Bab Atlas booking page, and only after dates are confirmed. Agafay is a fine day and a stone desert. It is not the Sahara. The dunes are the longer road, and they are worth it when the ticket gives you the nights.

Questions we actually get

How do you fly from the USA to Marrakech?

Most trips connect. A typical pattern is a U.S. hub, then Casablanca (CMN) or a European hub, then Marrakech Menara (RAK). Airlines change schedules, so search your dates and read the airport codes. RAK is the Marrakech airport. CMN is Casablanca, which is still a long drive south.

When is the best time for a Morocco trip from the United States?

October through December, and March through May. Days are warm enough for the medina and mild enough for walking. Summer midday in Marrakech and the desert is harsh. Winter nights on a Sahara route are cold. Ramadan changes restaurant hours, so check those dates for your year.

Do U.S. citizens need a visa for Morocco?

Check the official source before you buy tickets. The U.S. Department of State Morocco page currently lists a tourist visa as not required for stays under 90 days, and it asks for a passport with at least six months of validity and one blank page. The same page says to confirm the latest rules with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco. This site does not issue a visa decision. Rules can change.

What does a first Morocco itinerary from the USA look like?

A round trip into Marrakech pairs well with nights at Riad Bab Atlas and day tours, or with the 10-day Grand Morocco route, which returns to the riad and ends with a Menara drop-off. The 4-day Marrakech to Fes Sahara tour ends at a Fes hotel, so the flight home should leave from Fes or you need a separate transfer back. Multi-day tour prices are ask for price. The hot-air balloon is from $160 per person.

What money should I bring from the United States?

The currency is the Moroccan dirham. Dollars are not the everyday cash of the souks. Use ATMs in Marrakech, tell your bank you are traveling, and keep a card for hotels and many restaurants. The State Department page lists declaration amounts and says export of dirhams is prohibited. Confirm those figures before you travel. We do not publish an exchange rate.

Who do I call in the United States to plan this?
