Marrakech fair-price guide

The cited figures on this page stay in English so they match the sources. EN / FR / ES switch the menus. They do not rewrite these quotations.

Every number below is approximate and tied to a source. Where no public figure was found, the line stays qualitative. This is not a quote for our car.

Petit taxi in the city

A petit taxi in Marrakech is a city car, usually beige, for up to three passengers. The meter is compulsory. The duty comes from Dahir n° 1-63-260 of 12 November 1963. A Ministry of the Interior circular in December 2024 restated it. That reading is from Achraf Sym Tameloucht, “L’obligation du taximètre et la régulation des applications de transport au Maroc,” Village de la Justice, 16 April 2025.

Marrakech’s own pickup charge and per-kilometre rate were not found in a public order, so this page prints neither. Ask for the meter before the car moves. A flat price in the city, with the meter off, is the practice that article calls illegal.

Airport taxis

The same article says Marrakech Menara is an exception: since 2023, fixed fares by zone, about 80 to 160 dirhams depending on distance and time, under a provincial decision of April 2023. The meter is not used for those airport trips. That range is the jurist’s summary of a public taxi fare, not a zone-by-zone table copied from the decision, and it is not our price. Treat it as approximate.

Grand taxis

A grand taxi is the shared car between towns. It leaves when it is full. Agree the seat, or the whole car, before the bags go in. No Marrakech route table was found, so no intercity fare is printed here.

Souks

No official souk price list was found, so no dirham figure for a lamp, a rug, or a scarf is printed. The first number at a stall is an opening offer. A calm counter-offer is normal, and walking away is normal. Shops with a posted price are a different case.

Tipping

Rough Guides, in “Customs and etiquette in Morocco,” writes: tip waiters in cafés (1dh per person) and restaurants (5dh or so in moderate places, 10–15 percent in upmarket places); museum and monument curators (3–5dh); gardiens de voitures (5dh); filling station attendants (3–5dh); and porters who load baggage onto buses (5dh). Taxi drivers do not expect a tip, but always appreciate one. Those are their figures, approximate, not a bill from us.

Lonely Planet’s “The ultimate guide to tipping in Africa” says popular restaurants may add a 10% service charge, and if there isn’t one, a tip of about 10 to 15% is common when you were happy with the meal. For tours in Morocco it suggests about 10% for guides, with drivers tipped a bit less, done discreetly. Those amounts are theirs.

Scams, without a fake price

The pattern the jurist describes is a city taxi that refuses the meter and names a flat fare. You can decline and take the next car. He also writes that inDrive and Bolt were operating outside the recognized legal framework, while Toogo works with licensed taxis. This page does not print a “they will ask you X” number, because that number was not in the source.

On Jemaa el-Fna, a stranger who attaches himself as a guide has not been hired. Say no and keep walking. More on that square is in the travel tips.
