Agafay Quad Biking from Marrakech: Stone Desert ATV Guide
Agafay quad biking is the short desert outing west of Marrakech: ATVs on pale stone ridges, about 45 minutes to an hour from the city, and back the same day. It is not the Sahara dunes at Merzouga. This guide covers how far it is, what a typical ride looks like, how it fits with a private Agafay day, and when a camel stop or a quieter desert walk is the better call.

Agafay is not Merzouga
Agafay is a stone desert. The hills are bare, the light is strong, and there are no Erg Chebbi dunes. That is why it works as a day trip. Agafay vs Merzouga covers the trade-off in more detail. If sand dunes are the goal, you need a multi-day route toward Merzouga, not a morning of quads.
What a typical Agafay quad day looks like
- Morning or late afternoon: pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech, or from Riad Bab Atlas in the Palmeraie.
- Arrival: a short briefing, helmet, and a few minutes to get used to the ATV on flat ground.
- The ride: guided tracks through the stone hills. Pace follows the slowest rider in the group.
- Optional extras: a camel stop, lunch or tea at a camp, or more time walking the ridges without engines.
- Return: back to Marrakech the same evening.

Private day vs shared quad tour
Shared platform tours collect several hotels, keep a group clock, and often include a set ride length. They are the cheaper seat if budget comes first.

Who should skip the quads
Skip ATVs if anyone in the party is pregnant, has a recent back or neck injury, or is not comfortable on a motorized bike. Young children usually ride as passengers only when an operator allows it, and age rules differ. A quieter Agafay afternoon with tea and a walk is still a strong day out.
When to go and what to bring
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. In summer, prefer a late-afternoon start so you are not on the open stone at midday. Winter mornings are cold until the sun is up.
- Closed shoes and long trousers. Dust and stones get everywhere.
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a light layer for the wind on the bike.
- A scarf or buff for dust if you have one.
- Small dirham notes for tips and any drinks at a camp stop.
Pairing Agafay with a Palmeraie stay
