Best Time to Visit Marrakech: A Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to visit Marrakech is spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). Days are warm, nights are mild, and you can walk the medina and take day trips without fighting the heat. Summer is very hot and winter nights are cold, but both seasons still work if you plan the day around the weather. Here is what each month is like and which trips suit it.
The short answer
- Best overall: April, May, October, and early November.
- Busiest: Easter, European half-term weeks, and Christmas to New Year.
- Hottest: July and August, often near 38°C (100°F) in the afternoon.
- Coolest: December and January, with nights around 6–7°C (43–45°F).
- Sahara trips: October to April, when desert days are mild.

Spring: March to May
Spring is the easiest season for a first visit. The gardens are green, there is often still snow on the High Atlas, and afternoons are warm enough for a rooftop lunch. It is also busy, especially around Easter, so book Jardin Majorelle tickets online before you go and reserve your stay early. Spring is a good time for the Ourika Valley, when the river runs high and the foothills are green.
Summer: June to August
Summer afternoons in Marrakech are hot. That does not rule it out; it changes the rhythm of the day. See the medina and the palaces early, spend the middle of the day at a pool, and go back out after sunset when Jemaa el-Fna fills up. For a cooler day out, head to the Atlantic in Essaouira, where the sea breeze keeps it far milder, or up into the Atlas foothills. A sunrise hot air balloon also fits summer well, because you are flying in the coolest part of the day.

In the heat, where you sleep matters more. The Palmeraie is quieter and greener than the medina. Riad Bab Atlas there has 4 bedrooms and 2 pools, and the pools are shared. It sleeps up to 8, with a 3-night minimum, and breakfast is served the first morning only.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is the quieter twin of spring. Early September is still hot, but from late September the days settle into the high 20s°C (low 80s°F) and the light turns golden. October is many people's favourite month: warm enough for the pool, cool enough to walk all day. It is a strong season for the Agafay desert at sunset, and for longer desert routes.
Winter: December to February
Winter days are often sunny and pleasant for walking, but mornings and nights are cold, and some riads are chilly inside. Pack a warm layer and ask whether your room has heating. The High Atlas is at its most dramatic under snow. Late December is busy with Christmas and New Year visitors; January and February are calmer and usually better value.
When to go for the Sahara
The Sahara dunes at Merzouga are too far for a day trip from Marrakech, so they need a multi-day route. October to April is the comfortable window. Summer days in the dunes are extremely hot, and winter nights in the desert camp are cold, so bring layers from December to February. If you only have a day, Agafay is the stone desert close to the city; read Agafay vs Merzouga to choose. For the dunes, see the 4-day Marrakech to Fes Sahara tour and our packages.
Ramadan and holidays
During Ramadan, many Moroccans fast from dawn to sunset. Marrakech stays open to visitors, but daytime is slower, some cafés and shops keep shorter hours, and the evenings come alive after the sunset meal. It can be a rewarding time to visit if you are relaxed about the pace. Ramadan follows the lunar calendar and moves about 11 days earlier each year, so check the dates for your year. The two Eid holidays bring a few days of family celebrations and some closures.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Marrakech?
April, May, and October are the most comfortable months, with warm days around the high 20s°C (low 80s°F) and mild nights. Early November and late March are close behind and a little quieter.
Is Marrakech too hot in summer?
July and August afternoons often reach about 38°C (100°F) and can pass 40°C. Summer still works if you sightsee early, rest at a pool at midday, and go out again after sunset. Essaouira on the coast and the Atlas foothills are cooler day trips.
Is Marrakech worth visiting in winter?
Yes. December to February days are often sunny and good for walking, with fewer crowds outside the Christmas and New Year weeks. Nights are cold, around 6–8°C (43–46°F), so pack a warm layer and ask whether your room has heating.
When is the best time for a Sahara trip from Marrakech?
October to April. The Merzouga dunes are too far for a day trip and need a multi-day route. Summer is extremely hot in the desert, and winter nights at camp are cold. For a single day, the Agafay stone desert near Marrakech is the closer option.
Should I avoid Marrakech during Ramadan?
Not necessarily. The city stays open to visitors, but daytime is slower, some cafés and shops keep shorter hours, and evenings are lively after the sunset meal. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year, so check the dates for your trip.
When is Marrakech busiest?
Easter, European school half-terms in spring and autumn, and Christmas to New Year. In those weeks, book your stay, Jardin Majorelle tickets, and any private day trips ahead.
